Fern

‘I was rock bottom when I first became a Bridge tenant. Over the past few years I’ve had the stability to not only give my kids a secure home, but also to do some courses, get a job that offered new opportunities, and finally, recently, get full-time employment in a job I love. I’ve built a good life, and am now trying to make plans for the future.’

‘My health has improved so much, and there is no way that could have happened if I was in a place where I felt unsafe, my PTSD is very profound and even in the safest place it can be tough, but Bridge has ensured I’ve been stable enough to get some solid recovery.’

Strong Communities

The way we work is designed in collaboration with our residents. We know that involving our residents enables us to deliver better services that support wellbeing, connection and belonging. Our approach to community development and resident engagement has four focus areas:

  • Connecting residents with their neighbours and community
  • Influencing how we design and deliver services
  • Thriving communities through opportunities
  • Celebrating the strength and resilience of our residents and the community

Residents can build better relationships with people important to them

Case Study: Housing First

We have pioneered the Housing First model in Australia, offering permanent housing and tailored wrap-around support to people experiencing homelessness.

Andrew’s story shows the difference a home can make after years on the street. After a life-threatening knife attack, Andrew wanted help to turn his life around. He joined our Housing First program after decades of homelessness and housing insecurity, with support from Neami National.

Three years on, Andrew finds comfort that only a long-term stable home can provide. He volunteers at the Salvation Army, supporting and motivating others experiencing long-term homelessness to turn their lives around. Andrew is an advocate for Housing First, encouraging the government to invest more.

Case Study: Tania’s Big Idea 'The Golden Oldies'

We support our residents to develop programs that meet their needs through our Big Ideas grants and help to apply for other grants.

Tania is the driving force behind the ‘Golden Oldies’ program to reduce social isolation and loneliness for older people.

Funded by Big Ideas and a Department of Communities and Justice grants, Golden Oldies supports ageing in place through inclusion. Residents connect with neighbours and the community through exercise classes, Qigong, art and craft sessions, bus outings and move nights.

“Golden Oldies is my favourite project. I used to sit in the hallway outside my neighbours’ doors and have a conversation. We created an environment where people were checking in on each other. They weren’t lonely or isolated anymore.” Tania says.
